CBT - cognitive behavioural therapy

“I’m looking for CBT”

These are very common words when we meet a client for the first time.  If you’re thinking about motorbike training, then no, that’s Compulsory Basic Training, and something very different!  Cognitive Behaviour Therapy is a very popular, evidence-based treatment for many psychological problems.

However, one of the things we noticed when clients asked for CBT, is that very often they meant something subtly different.  Sometimes what clients mean is “I don’t want medication” or “I don’t want to sit on a couch and talk about my childhood”.  CBT is seen as a modern, client-friendly treatment of choice for many.

While it’s true that CBT is incredibly popular (for good reason), it’s also important to appreciate that it is just one approach among many, and a skilled practitioner will tailor any approach to the client’s needs.  It is also equally important for client and practitioner to form a good working relationship of trust and collaboration.  Without this, CBT is just a tool in the hand of someone you don’t particularly get on with… and it’s the application of the tool that is important.

“I’ve had CBT and it didn’t work” is also something we occasionally hear.  When we explore this further with clients, we often find that it wasn’t the technique that was ineffective, but rather the relationship between the client and practitioner, or that there was not enough time given to fully implement the techniques.  CBT might be effective, but it most certainly is not a quick fix.
