As we approach the end of 2012, now might be a good time to start updating (or even writing for the first time!) your CV.  This is not a forecast of doom and gloom, but a top tip, and here are 3 reasons why...

  1. CVs get out of date very quickly.  As time goes by, we learn new things and get new skills that are missing from our CVs.  The natural break over Christmas and the New Year is a great time to check all is up to date.
  2. Writing a CV is good for your confidence.  Seeing your skills and abilities written down in what is essentially a marketing letter, can boost your sense of worth.  Even if you've been out of work for a while, summarising your training courses (e.g. via ILA Scotland) or voluntary work looks good.
  3. You often need your CV when it's not ready.  Most of us who are in secure employment don't think about our CVs.  It is only when bad news arrives that we find ourselves panicking and trying to put something together.  However, the emotional state of panic is not the best frame of mind to be writing a CV in.  Better to be calm, relaxed and thoughtful.  Sometimes we are head-hunted or approached by someone asking for our CV.  Again, we don't want to give something out of date or that has been rushed.

Even if you are used to applying for jobs via application forms, a CV allows you to practise selling yourself (and don't forget the covering letter either!).  Some people actually copy and paste relevant information from their CV into application forms.

And now the good news...

The Craigie Partnership is offering existing clients and readers of this blog a free CV health check during the month of January 2013.  So, if you want a professional to look over your CV and give you some free feedback in January, why not dust off your most recent version and start updating it.
